Is Beekeeping Hard?

Beekeeping is not easy but the experience is both rewarding and fun.

Beekeeping can be fun to do with your spouse, friend or neighbor.

Beekeeping can be time consuming, expensive, physically demanding, and requires patience.

There are hazards your bees will face, such as pest infestation, parasites, predators and disease….you must be prepared for these things in order for your bees to be happy and healthy.

Time to do a hive inspection.

But learning is the fun of it all…am I right?

So….where how do you even get started with something like this??

JOIN A BEE CLUB…FIND A MENTOR

You will want a beekeeper friend or two to join you along the way when getting started (trust me they will all be eager to help)

ORDER YOUR BEES

“Bee” sure to order your bees earlier for Spring pickup….there is a very small window of when you can actually get bees every year and they sell out very quickly. (view our online shop to get your honeybees ordered early)

DECIDE ON BEEKEEPING EQUIPMENT

The type of equipment you choose will depend on your budget, location, physical abilities and what you’re trying to achieve.

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

You will become very familiar with protective gloves, jacket, or full protective bee suit, or a simple hat and veil. As you gain experience you will choose what works best for you in time.

BEE STINGS….YUP, THEY HAPPEN.

You will get stung, even through a bee suit at times….I don't sugar coat this…it just happens. Are you okay with this? Do you have bee or insect allergies? A bee suit and veil will protect you from the worst…using a smoker to calm the bees and working in an efficient manner will reduce stings a lot…but just know its possible to get stung on occasion.

KNOW HOW TO KEEP YOUR BEES HEALTHY

Your bees will require treatments and feeding at times. Educate yourself on varroa mites, hive beetles, pests and predators.

LOCAL LAWS AND REGISTRATION

Every region is a little different. Some areas require you to register all your hives and some areas may not allow honeybees in residential areas. Your best resource is most likely from your local beekeepers or bee club.

So….if that didn't scare you off too bad…I’d say you’re ready to get started! We would love to hear from you and get you going in the right direction!

Love ya!
